What Kind of Dog Does Well with a Shock Collar?

Most dogs do very well training with a shock collar.  If you have a particularly nervous or anxious dog, then this kind of training is not likely to produce the results you desire.  Barring those kinds of dogs, the shock collar is available in a variety of sizes and levels of sophistication. Unlike dog barking collars, training collars have a remote to control the problem and can correct multiple problems. For instance, you can correct digging and jumping on guests. Or chewing on the pillows and getting in the garbage.

You best choice is a collar that has multiple levels of stimulation.  You place the collar on your dog, and after a few days to let them forget their new accessory’s origin, you activate the device and increasing levels until you notice a reaction from your dog.  You aren’t looking for anything major, just an acknowledgement that something is happening.  That is the base level for your training.  If needed, you amplify the stimulus when your dog doesn’t comply quickly, and then return to the lower level as soon as possible.

Because a shock collar comes in a variety of sizes, make sure you get the right one for your dog.  The collar that is appropriate for your Terrier is not right for a Mastiff and vice versa.  Dogs younger than six months should not use these collars at all.  Pick up all the accessories you want when you purchase your unit.  Whether you need multiple collars to allow you to train several dogs at once, or you want pads that will discourage your dogs from climbing onto the furniture when you are gone, getting them from the beginning will eliminate the odds of not finding compatible accessories later on.

No matter what unit you chose or what breed of dog you have, remember that a shock collar isn’t a substitution for your involvement in training your dog.  It is possible to use a collar to train a dog to cease a specific behavior without your input, but if you want a dog that is disciplined to obey you, you need to participate.
